“I had nothing motivating me to get fit until I came to Robot.”

I took a long time trying to find a gym, it was a big deicion for me, I’ve been in Martial Arts since I was 4 years old and I wanted to get into Jiu Jitsu. When I came across Robot, there were key things that I found that other places didnt have that I really liked, there’s no macho feeling at Robot, there’s no one that is intimidating….I have developed some of my best friends from this place- its not just a place to train, its a place to get fit and a place to make friends. I’ve been overweight my whole life- I’ve never found something I could do to lose the weight- everything was too boring. I had nothing motivating me to get fit until I came to Robot.

I’ve lost a tremendous amount of weight and gained a tremendous amount of muscle. So far, I’ve lost 5% body fat, lost about 20 lbs. It’s a whole package. At Robot you get everything: Fitness, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Diet, you get everything you need to be successful at what you want to do whether your goal is to fight, just have fun fight, to learn self defense, it’s all available for you.

“Fell in love with the place. They really pay attention to us, one on one”

It’s attention to detail instructors give us. They really pay attention to us, one on one. Lot of mat space. Full weight area, I love that, cancelled my regular gym membership.

I’ve trained at a few different schools and in different disciplines over the years. This is by far the best school I’ve trained at. Tim and David are amazing instructors. Fun, intelligent and easy to talk to.

Starting anything new is intimidating, especially a martial art. Everyone at Robot, from instructors to students made coming in and starting up as easy as possible. There is ZERO “meat-head” mentality here. Which is refreshing and makes training lots of fun.

I can’t say enough about Robot, I love training here.

I’ve trained at three different gyms during my jiu-jitsu lifespan, and I can attest to the fact that Tim (the instructor of Robot BJJ) is the most technical instructor I’ve come across. He will also answer any question you have about techniques or even jui jitsu philosophy, no matter how dumb it might be (“so, I should be cross-facing him when I put him in side control?”) The beginner’s class that he teaches is extremely helpful, as the instructors go through every detail you’ll need to advance in skill level (with fine details that are often overlooked by most instructors). Holes in your jui jitsu game WILL be filled in. The instructors even use a move program so you don’t come in one day with half guard training and the next day with full-mount drills.

As for the people, I’ve never met a friendlier group. Seriously, you’ll actually become friends with everyone there. Almost everyone is a UCLA student, so there are no muscle-heads (you know, the ones that you always try to avoid rolling with) that just want to rip your arm off.

I have a background in judo, and Robot is my first foray into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Sure, I may not be able to draw comparisons between BJJ schools, but I can tell you this: when multiple student at multiple other schools tell me to check out Robot, I listen. Funny, they all trash talk each other a bit, but NO ONE had anything but glowing words about Robot and Tim, and many guys who live far make the commute to Santa Monica. They also have the least attitude of any jujitsu place I stopped in to. Add in the fact that they have the best price, and joining was a no-brainer. I’m very grateful to these guys: they’ve helped me immensely, and they’re just really good human beings. I haven’t had the time to try out the Muay Thai, but it’s one of the only Muay Thai classes in West LA.  A++, if you’re thinking of doing BJJ, don’t hesitate to stop in.

I’ve been training with these group of guys since they were over at UCLA and if you’re looking for a set of down to earth, competent, and passionate instructors, you need not look further than Robot Method. No egos at this academy, we’re all just here to learn and get in shape.

I can personally attest that since I began regularly training, I’ve lost about 20 lbs, and 2-3″ off my waistline. Come check out a free lesson, you won’t regret it.

The school with the most meticulous and technical jiu jitsu instruction along with instructors who possess unparalleled teaching abilities is Robot.  The instructors watch each student very closely and tailor what they say to improve an individual student’s game.  And the location in Santa Monica / West LA is awesome, very close to UCLA and SMC.  The thing that impresses me most is that even though Tim and David are very high level jiujitsu practitioners, they are always learning and evolving what they do, that is what truly makes a great martial artist; GSP, Jose Aldo, all the highest level guys are the ones who consistently challenge themselves.  And more importantly not only are the instructors incredible at jiu jitsu, they are incredible at teaching jiu jitsu.  And from my experience being good at it and being good at teaching it do not always go together.  The new facilities are top notch- super clean, great location, etc.  The environment fosters learning because even though there are people there from beginners to experts, everyone helps each other out and no one is trying to take off limbs or prove anything other than that they have a love for jiu jitsu.  Also as a side note it is super affordable compared to many other schools. I would recommend this gym to anyone, whether you are looking to get in shape or be the next world champion Robot is an exceptional place to train.

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced grappler, Robot is perhaps the most excellent gym to train at for Brazilan Jiu Jitsu in the Los Angeles area. Actually its one of the best places to train period. The quality of instruction and attention given by Tim and David are perhaps unparalleled elsewhere. That might be a bit hyperbolic but I’ve personally trained at other gyms and the quality of instruction was not on par with Tim and Davids and other members who have trained elsewhere can attest to this as well. They have a special talent for breaking down techniques that is at once detailed but still easy to understand. Best of all, they’re always willing to roll with their students and then sit down with them afterwards to explain to them what they need to work on or answer any questions. Some instructors at gyms won’t even roll with their own students. Finally, as other reviewers have said, there are no egos here. Everyone has a friendly and helpful attitude and they just want to learn jiu jitsu and have fun.

I started training BJJ in July, and added muay thai to my contract in late August.  I was a pilates and spinning junkie for years and got into great shape doing it, but felt like something was missing.  My husband had been training at Robot since March and encouraged me to try a class.  I’m hooked.  It’s one thing to go to pilates and spinning and feel strong, but an entirely different thing to get on the mat and DO something with your body that proves how strong you have gotten and pushes you to get stronger.

David, Tim, and Laercio are top notch instructors who genuinely care about their students’ progress, and I cannot imagine a more supportive, encouraging, and friendly environment to train in.  As a woman in a predominantly male sport, I was expecting a little awkwardness training with mostly men--not so.  I have never felt uncomfortable drilling or sparring with any of my classmates or instructors.  No one treats me like a girl, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible.
